    The first prime minister of Nigeria was sir Abubakar Tafawa Ballewa who assumed office on 30 August 1957 and retained his position after the country’s independence in 1960. He won a second term and remained in office until his assassination in January 1966.

    Tafawa Balewa was born in December 1912 in Bauchi, Northern Nigeria Protectorate, British Nigeria (present day Bauchi state).

    He studied at the renowned Barewa college along with Sardauna Ahmadu Bello.

    He served as a headmaster in the then Bauchi middle school after completing his 5years program at Barewa college.

    He was sent among with other teachers to further their education at the University of London’s Institute of Education.

    He arrived to a new job as an education inspector before joining politics afterward.

    He was elected in 1946 to the Northern House of Assembly, and to the Legislative Council in 1947.

    He served as Minister of Works in 1952, then as Minister of Transport in the late 50s.

    Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, from 1960 to 1961, doubled as Foreign Affairs advocate of Nigeria.

    He Died at the age of 53 on 15 January 1966. He was overthrown and murdered in a military coup somewhere near Lagos, many other leaders, including his old companion Sir Ahmadu Bello where also victims of this coupe.

    He survived with four wives and 19 children.
