George Floyd was a 6.4ft tall 46years old African American that was killed by a police officer, Derek Chauvin who knelt on his neck for 8 minutes 40 seconds, an incident that sparked a national and global movement against police brutality.
Floyd was alleged to have passed a counterfeit 20usd note at a grocery store. Derek and four other officers arrived for his arrest. He was handcuffed and restrained face down on the street with Derek’s knee on his neck for over 8minutes, even though he was heard telling them he couldn’t breathe, he remained restrained in that manner till his death.
Reports by medical examiners released on June 1 showed that Floyd’s heart stopped while he was being restrained and that his death was a homicide caused by cardiopulmonary arrest complicating law enforcement subdual, restraint, and neck compression.
Chauvin, the officer who held Floyd down, had his third-degree murder charge upgraded to second-degree murder and also faces a second-degree manslaughter charge.
The three other officers present when Floyd was killed face charges of aiding and abetting second-degree murder and manslaughter. All four have been fired from the Minneapolis police force.
George Perry Floyd Jr was born on October 14, 1973 in Fayetteville, North Carolina, U.SA.
He was a rapper in early and last worked as both a security guard and truck driver before his death on 25th May 2020.
He had a great sports life as a young man having played a big role in his basketball and a football team at Yates which he helped get to state championship. He was a big fan of LeBron James.
Although he had a rough life in and out of prison, battling drug addiction, he was considered by those who knew him to be someone that’s cool to be with.
